Support. Understanding. Craft builders. I could not keep going without my critique buds. Every week I have a deadline, and I try to reach that goal. Or at least get as close to it as I can. The advice of other writers in my genre are invaluable. I need a professional approach to a manuscript. It's one thing to have a friend (beta reader) say "This doesn't work. I don't know why, but it doesn't." But a critique partner can say "You need more layering, inner thoughts, you've got talking heads, and you're character's motivation just isn't believable." Yeah, it stings. But I grow. I learn my weaknesses. And they just help me create a better story all-around.
But, it's not only the manuscript help that keeps me going. It's the shoulder they provide when you get a rejection, or ten. They keep reminding you how good you are. That they've been there, too. And it only takes one "yes" to make the world right.
I love my critique buds :)
